12-year-old Among Fatalities in SEK Wrecks
A 12 year old girl, Monica B. Hershey, was killed in a car crash that injured several others on Monday night. It was one of a string of deadly accidents that occurred on Monday in icy conditions. Aside from Monica Hershey being hurt and killed in the crash, Vanessa Hershey and 13 year old Jason Hershey, all of Fort Scott, were injured in the accident. Police weren’t sure what caused the accident but are blaming it and several other fatal accidents in the area on icy roadway conditions. Vanessa Hershey was the driver of the Toyota that she lost control of, swerved into the southbound lanes, hit a shoulder curb and went airborne before it landed and rolled on the ground repeatedly.
Upon arriving at the accident scene, police officials and fire and rescue personnel said that no one in the Toyota was wearing their seatbelt upon arrival or when the accident occurred. Two other fatal accidents occurred on Monday in southeast Kansas in what police are blaming the icy road conditions on.
